The Tri-County Region

The tri-county region in Lowcountry South Carolina is rich in resources —our people —our natural environment, including nearly 100 miles of coastline, and —our economy. Maintaining this quality of life is likely to be challenging in the future. It will require forward thinking and the ability to  respond promptly and adapt to change.

Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester are among the fastest growing regions in the state, and contain South Carolina’s  third largest municipality, North Charleston. In 2000 more than half a million people called our region home. The projected population for 2030 is 770,000 people.

Rapid growth, coupled with expansive land development patterns and practices, has stressed our coastal and marine resources and made some communities in our region more vulnerable to natural hazards and future environmental changes.

Local governments and the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments are working with residents in the tri-county region now on various planning projects—

  • Local Comprehensive Plans
  • Hazard Mitigation Plans
  • Regional Land Use Plan
  • Regional Transportation Plan

In addition, the state Department of Health and Environmental Control has assembled a special committee to study and make recommendations about coastal conditions and future shoreline changes.

This initiative offers citizens a unique opportunity to build on current planning activities and integrate the results in a more holistic vision of our communities and region —and to identify management strategies responsive and adaptive to future challenges —key elements of resilient communities.
