Ecosystem-Based Management Planning Tools Expo

Creating Resilient Communities hosted the Ecosystem-Based Management Planning TOOLS Expo on April 17th at 10 Storehouse Row at the Navy Yard at Noisette, North Charleston, SC.

There were over 50 public participants who attended the Planning Tools Expo.  People learned not only about the Creating Resilient Communities initiative, but were able to have ‘one-on-one’ discussions with software developers and experts about decision support tools.

A special thanks to the Ecosystem-Based Management Tools Network and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and to the Creating Resilient Communities partners: PlaceMatters, the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments, the City of North Charleston, Intelligent Marine Planning, NatureServe, Placeways, and the Michaux Conservancy

CommunityViz In Public: Keypad Polling Demo

An interactive demonstration of public meeting and group discussion support tools showing how large audiences can interact with CommunityViz using keypad polling technology.

Nonpoint Source Pollution & Erosion Comparison Tool (N-SPECT)   

A desktop GIS tool for comparing the relative pollution and erosion impacts from various land use scenarios.

Habitat Priority Planner (HPP)

A desktop GIS tool for prioritizing habitat and other community values, including a module specifically designed for stakeholder engagement.

Carolinian Ecoregional Assessment

An analysis of coastal lands and water resources for the Southeast US and identification of priority biodiversity conservation areas.

Sea Level Rise Visualization

Highlights of recent work at the NOAA Coastal Services Center to help communities better visualize and plan for the impacts of sea level rise.

CommunityViz

A GIS tool designed to help people visualize, analyze, and communicate about important land-use decisions

Community Vulnerability Assessment Tool

A method to assess community vulnerability to various natural hazards.

Open Ocean Map

A desktop GIS application used to interview and gather spatially explicit knowledge from commercial and recreational fishermen.

Delphos

A desktop decision support tool that uses multi-criteria analysis to find the best fisheries for sustainability certification and areas to designate as marine reserves. 

Port Orford Ocean Resources Team DST

A web-based tool used to support marine reserve design and stewardship planning processes.

NatureServe Vista

A decision support tool integrating conservation information and land use patterns and policies to provide planners, resource managers, and communities tools to help manage their natural resources.  

Creating Resilient Communities Initiative

Alert, Evacuate, Shelter

A 4-H Community Readiness Network training about ways to use geospatial technology, develop partnerships, build emergency teams nationwide, and keep communities safe.

Our Region Our Plan Regional Forum

There were around 300 people who attended the Our Region Our Plan’s Regional Forum held on Saturday, July 26th at the Charleston Area Convention Center in North Charleston, SC.  The event took place over the course of 6.5 hours.  In the morning session people were randomly assigned seats (10 people to a table).  For the afternoon session people were assigned to tables based on geographic area.  With the assistance of facilitators, participants used keypad polling technology to capture opinions about the future of the tri-county region.

Apart from the public participation sessions there were several speakers over the course of the day.  The keynote address was given by the former Governor of Maryland, Parris Glendening and current president of the Smart Growth Leadership Institute.  Phil Hanegraaf, Greg Lipscomb, and Peter Katz also presented on topics such as: Regional Scan, Community Survey, and Postcard from the Future (respectively).

Our Local Implementation Team had a booth at the event where brochures were distributed and questions were answered by representatives.  Collectively they about the Creating Resilient Communities initiative and how it would add value to Our Region Our Plan!
